About This Activity

In Precalculus students will extend their knowledge of Algebra 2 and Geometry in order to develop the mathematical skills necessary for calculus. This course will begin with an intensive study of polynomial, rational, and transcendental functions. It will then extend the introductory trigonometry students covered in Algebra 2 and Geometry to include transformations of trigonometric functions, inverse trigonometric functions, and trigonometric identities and equations. The course will end with an introduction to calculus in order to assess student readiness. Precalculus over the summer condenses nearly two semesters of mathematics content into a six week course. Students should expect a pace and workload that exceeds even a traditional honors-level class, with limited repetition and a strong emphasis on retention and independent learning. As such, student readiness will be routinely assessed. Students struggling to retain the material will be advised to enroll in Honors Precalculus in the academic year. Placement into AP Calculus AB is determined by demonstrated readiness, with the goal of ensuring that students are set up for success. Enrollment in this pathway is a potential opportunity, not a guarantee of acceleration.
