Description
The American Red Cross Lifeguarding class is designed to provide the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illness until EMS personnel take over. Participants who successfully complete the Lifeguarding Course receive an American Red Cross certificate valid for 2 years.Prerequisites: Complete a swim- tread-swim sequence: Jump into the water submerge resurface swim 150 yards (using the front crawl breaststroke or a combination of both) maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs then swim 50 yards using the front crawl breaststroke or a combination of both. Complete a timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds by starting in the water swimming 20 yards surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 to 12 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point holding the object at the surface with both hand exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
This course includes online class work that must be completed before the first day of class. The online class work will be sent 2 weeks prior to the course start date.

Please bring the following to every class session: swimsuit, towel(s), comfortable change of clothing (participants will be kneeling on the ground to perform CPR), snacks/lunch, water bottle, and sunscreen. All swimsuits should provide adequate coverage while performing strenuous physical activity. Cap and goggles are optional.
Novato Parks & Recreation reserves the right to modify or cancel any program, class, or event for any reason. Participants will be notified immediately of such changes. Full refunds will be issued for a program altered or canceled by the City, or if a participant is dissatisfied with any program. Refund requests must be made no later than one business day after the program ends. Refund and/or transfer requests must be approved by the program Supervisor. An $8 registration fee and $5 processing fee ($13 total) will be deducted from the total cost of the refunded program.
