Take the next step toward becoming a camp leader!
The Counselor in Training (CIT) Program at YMCA Camp Nissokone is an immersive three-week experience for teens ready to develop the skills needed to become strong leaders, role models, and future camp staff.
Week 1 — Leadership Foundations
CITs begin with leadership training, team-building, and an outdoor challenge while learning practical skills including:
- Child development and camper behavior
- Group and cabin dynamics
- Communication and conflict resolution
- Responsibility and problem-solving
- Creating positive camp experiences
Weeks 2 & 3 — Hands-On Experience
CITs work alongside experienced camp staff and assist with younger cabin groups, putting their skills into practice with support and coaching from mentors.
CITs also participate in a
community service experience, reinforcing leadership through service and the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
Schedule:
- Check-In: Sunday of Week 1, 3:30-4:30 p.m.
- Check-Out: Saturday of Week 3,10 a.m.
Registration Details
- Deposit: $100 per camper, per session — non-refundable
- Multi-Activity Discount: Save 5% on each additional activity
Plans change—we understand! Cancellation requests should be emailed to camp@ymcadetroit.org. Your $100 deposit is non-refundable. For cancellations made April 1, 2027 or later, an additional $50 cancellation fee per camper, per session applies. Fees are refundable only in the case of illness or injury with a written note from a physician to YMCA Camping Services. In the case of homesickness, dismissal, voluntary withdrawal, late arrivals, or early departures, there will be no refund of fees. Cancellations received less than 7 days before the start of your session are not eligible for a refund or credit.

Camp registration is not complete until you have completed your online camper forms. Epact will send you an email to complete your profile - it is due one week prior to the start of the camp week.
