Navigators – Two Weeks. One Unforgettable Journey.
The Navigators Program at YMCA Camp Nissokone is the third level in our Wilderness Immersion – Leadership Development (WI-LD) track, crafted for adventurous teens entering Grade 9 who are ready to take their leadership and backcountry skills to the next level.
This two-week expedition blends deep skill-building with one of Michigan’s most iconic backpacking experiences — guiding campers through a powerful journey of growth, resilience, and exploration.
Week 1: Skills, Leadership & PreparationDuring Skills Week, Navigators will:
- Train in outdoor leadership, fire safety, Leave No Trace principles, and backcountry cooking
- Practice team-building, problem-solving, and wilderness communication
- Build confidence through daily challenges and peer collaboration
- Prepare for their upcoming expedition with hands-on backpacking workshops
Week 2: The Trip Experience – Pictured Rocks National LakeshoreCampers will then embark on a 5-day, 4-night backpacking adventure along the stunning Lakeshore Trail at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, part of the North Country National Scenic Trail. Highlights include:
- Picturesque sandstone cliffs, lighthouses, and waterfalls
- Pristine campsites with views of Lake Superior
- Wilderness navigation, group leadership, and reflection
- A unique sense of accomplishment only the trail can offer
Safety First, AlwaysTrip safety is our highest priority. All trip leaders are:
- Certified Wilderness First Responders
- Trained in backpacking, survival skills, and group management
- Equipped with satellite communication and emergency protocols
Whether preparing for future leadership programs or simply ready to dive deep into nature, Navigators is where skills meet adventure — and confidence takes flight.
