About This Activity

In this four-day stop motion animation camp for ages 8–10, discover how stories come alive through movement, materials, and imagination. Guided by teaching artist and animator Emma Prochaska, young creators will learn the basics of stop motion animation while transforming everyday objects and materials into characters, settings, and props. Campers begin by dreaming up stories and sketching simple storyboards to plan their ideas. They’ll experiment with a wide variety of materials—clay, felt, cut paper, armatures, and found objects—to build puppets, create textures, and design miniature environments. Using iPads, campers will animate their creations frame by frame, watching their stories unfold one small movement at a time. They’ll build creativity and problem-solving skills through playful experimentation and collaboration with new friends. Youth will explore different animation techniques, from motion studies and flip books to found object animations and pixilation. The camp wraps up with a fun-filled showcase where campers share their animated stories with family and friends, celebrating creativity, curiosity, and the magic of making things move.
