Does your child love all things grammar (or just need help in these areas)? We’ll review the basics: nouns (including proper nouns and pronouns), verbs (regular and irregular), adjectives, adverbs, commas, and periods, what a sentence/avoiding sentence fragments, then move on to the more challenging aspects of writing, using such things as semicolons and colons, using conjunctions and writing compound sentences, avoiding run-on sentences, addressing common misspellings, and identifying/using homophones, homographs, and homonyms. We also will address any topics that come up with the students’ writing. Depending on the pace and interest, we may work on diagramming sentences and beginning paragraph writing. Students should be able to read on a 3rd-grade level and write or type 2-3 simple sentences in a 5-minute period. We will have and use Chromebooks for extended writing assignments and online activities but shorter responses will be handwritten. Instructor: Audra Eckes Audra grew up on Long Island. After earning an MS in Deaf Education, she worked as a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing in NYC, Long Island, and Maryland. She moved to NC in 2007 for her career but wound up becoming a bonus mom to a child who eventually needed to be homeschooled. So, in 2014, a new “teaching”/learning adventure began. Besides learning and teaching, Audra’s other interests include reading, writing, photography, dog rescue, and spending time with her family.
