About This Activity

Timeless Threads II: A Couture Fashion Journey Through History is a comprehensive exploration of the evolution of high fashion from ancient civilizations to contemporary designers. This course delves into the cultural, social, and artistic significance of couture fashion, analyzing construction techniques, textile choices, and symbolic meanings behind iconic garments. Students will develop practical skills in garment construction, patternmaking, and embellishment techniques, while also examining the influence of historic high fashion on modern couture design. Throughout the course, students will embark on a journey through various historical periods, including ancient civilizations, medieval and Renaissance Europe, the Baroque and Rococo eras, the 19th and early 20th centuries, and contemporary fashion. Each period will be studied in depth, with a focus on key designers, fashion houses, and notable trends. Hands-on projects and experiential learning activities will allow students to apply their knowledge of historical couture fashion to practical garment construction. Additionally, students will conduct research on historic couture fashion houses or designers of color, critically evaluating their contributions to the fashion industry. By the end of the course, students will have gained a comprehensive understanding of couture fashion history, acquired practical skills in garment construction, and developed the ability to critically analyze and interpret fashion trends across different time periods. This course will empower students to appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship behind couture fashion while also exploring its cultural and social significance in shaping the world of fashion today.
