About This Activity

Students will embark on an immersive journey through the diverse realms of science fiction and fantasy literature. Through an exploration of various subgenres, students will gain a deeper understanding of the distinct elements that define each, from fairies to alien planets and space travel. Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to select books of their choice from curated lists. By delving into their chosen texts, students will analyze how these works exemplify the defining characteristics of their respective subgenres and will participate in hands-on activities in class to bring fun and creativity to the learning process. Students can work independently, with a buddy, or in groups. Students will need to read or listen to the audiobooks in advance of classroom discussion. To check comprehension, there will be periodic quizzes and 2 exams. Testing aids in material retention for those who wish a transcript grade, they will be the base of the grade. In addition to classroom participation, students are welcome and encouraged, but not required, to write about the readings or a fictional work in a similar style. For transcript work, any writing will be used as a chance to earn extra credit. All writing will be evaluated and commented on. Instructor: Stephenie Stevens Ms. Stephenie has been homeschooling her two youngest children, Allen and Cooper, since 2018; Allen will be graduating this year! She has previously taught several classes at THE and has been involved with the D&D and Chess Clubs. She has had a well-rounded education, acquiring bachelor degrees in both Genetics and Literature. Though her math and science skills are strong, her passion lies in the humanities.
