About This Activity
Join the Marine Science Institute for a 2-hour exploration of the San Francisco Bay aboard the 90-foot research vessel, the R.V. Robert G. Brownlee, and discover the life in the estuary and how we are connected to it. Working as a team, participants deploy a 16-foot trawl net to bring fish on board, set a Peterson Mud Grab to collect a sample of sediment from the bottom of the bay (the benthos) to examine closely to discover live invertebrates, and lastly, observe and discuss live plant and animal plankton using a microscope and digital display. Live Music will be available from 12 - 1 pm. Bring a lunch and hang out at our beachfront! Must be at least 5 years old to board; all children must be accompanied and supervised by a registered adult; close-toed shoes required. All attendees must pre-register. MSI Event Cancellation and Refund Policy: No refunds for cancellations made within two weeks of the program start date. MSI will fully refund fees if the session is canceled*. Please note our events still take place rain or shine, including our Discovery Voyages, unless deemed a safety issue by the ship's Captain. *Force Majeure: If the Marine Science Institute facilities are rendered unsuitable for the operation of Marine Science Institute programs because of Force Majeure such as natural events (fire, earthquake, flooding, etc.), political events (war, strike, massive protests, etc.), governmental action (pandemic response, etc.), or any other causes beyond the reasonable control of Marine Science Institute, then a credit transfer to a future program will be issued.
