About This Activity
Description
for students entering grades 9-12, NYSSMA Level 5-6
In this weeklong class, high school-aged musicians will have an opportunity to discuss, learn, and experience the awesome responsibility of musical leadership. In ensembles, these leadership skills can be employed by section members, section leaders, and student conductors alike. This course will focus on what it means to be a musical leader, actions you can take to become a leader on and off the podium, and how to model that musical leadership consistently.
All students will learn basic conducting skills; have detailed discussions about musical choice and decision making in an ensemble; and learn musician responsibility, personal influence, body language, and personal projection.
At the end of the course, the students will produce a short presentation for an audience, demonstrating their skills as conductors and performers. They will be ready to return to their home programs and youth groups and utilize these new skills for the betterment of their ensemble.
