Okinawan Shuri Te is the name of the karate that developed in the area around the city of Shuri on the island of Okinawa. Karate is a Japanese word meaning "empty hand" that was given to the Okinawan art of self-defense. Shuri-Te is a striking art with fast movements and natural breathing. Self-defense techniques are trained through the study of empty-handed forms known as kata. This class will be led by Thomas Lockhart (6th degree Black Belt) and Jason Meyer (4th degree Black Belt). They will train traditional methods of self defense (Shuri Te) and incorporate basic elements of Judo for a comprehensive martial arts training approach.Saint Paul Parks and Recreation programs adhere to CDC and MN Department of Health guidance on COVID-19. Programs offered may require modifications based on future public health recommendations.
