This class will teach students the core principles of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). For parents unfamiliar with BJJ, it is a “predominantly ground-based martial art, using the principles of leverage, angles, pressure and timing, as well as knowledge of the human anatomy.” This martial art practice does not include punching or kicking but instead features wrestling, grappling and dynamic problem-solving. Think of it like playing chess, but with your entire body, especially your brain! Or imagine a math equation changing as you try to solve it; that's Jiu Jitsu! Under strict supervision, students will learn takedowns, grappling positions and how to apply submissions carefully. Students will not only learn how to compete against their classmates, but also how to help each other improve their skills. The game of Jiu Jitsu develops toughness and grit in each student, building strength and confidence. Instructor Gianni Handoko began learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2011 and has competed in many BJJ competitions. He is currently a Purple Belt and teaches at Gracie Jiu Jitsu in the Richmond District.
