As an Italian-American myself who has lived in various Italian cities, I couldn't be more excited to offer this class to kids who want to learn about the exciting, vibrant, historical country of Italy though fun hands-on projects. Each week we will briefly learn an Italian word or phrase and one of their many fun, colorful (appropriate) gestures. After that, we'll focus on one city per week and take the students on a 'picture essay' that showcases its history, geography, culture, food. Such cities will include Venice, Florence, Rome, Bologna, Naples, Pompeii, to name only a few. Once a city has been showcased and discussed in detail, we will then do a hands-on project that complements that particular city. For example, for Rome, we would all make either a gladiator's sword and shield (using cardboard, scissors, and markers) OR a tunic, which was a commonly worn type of clothing for women in Roman times. Another example, for Naples, we would discuss its history and of course its reputation as the birthplace of the pizza, and either design a pizza on a piece of poster board (using markers and scissors, then cutting it in a circle) OR they could have real live dough spread out on a baking tray in front of them which they could put various toppings on to bake it later! This class is nothing but fun and my passion for all things Italy will shine through during each class. I hope to see your kids in La Bell'Italia!
