About This Activity

Ceramics offers students the chance to build something with their hands engaging them in kinesthetic learning. It also allows students to build a useful product; A major theme in ceramics is Form vs. Function, form serves beauty and function serves a purpose. Students will be able to build with clay using many hand-building techniques such as slab construction, coiling, pinch, and hollow and enclosed forms. Students will learn the science behind ceramics! Understanding the chemical makeup of clay and glaze, the correct temperatures and firing processes that suit the needs of the clay and glazes used. They will explore the texture and strength differences between several types of clay. This Ceramics elective will offer a time for students to create something useful and explore the world of 3D artmaking. This course meets approval for the UC A-G criteria for a Visual and Fine Arts credit.
