*Four-day week. No camp on Friday* Winter is here, and it’s snowing in Florida! Snowy egrets, that is... These bright white wading birds are year-round residents of Sanibel Island, constantly decorating the area with their beautiful feathers. They are a great example of successful conservation efforts. In the late 1800s, their population was severely depleted because people hunted them for their plumage. Thanks to environmental protections, their populations have since rebounded and are flourishing once again. With their long black legs and bright yellow feet, snowy egrets are excellent hunters. You can often see them dancing through shallow waters, wiggling their toes in hopes of luring a tasty snack. This winter camp, we’ll grab our binoculars and best birding gear as we explore the island in search of these elegant birds. We’ll stretch our own long legs as we play some predator-prey games and have an epic dance-off inspired by the hunting techniques of the snowy egrets. And of course, there will be plenty of time to splash in the Gulf, sip hot cocoa with friends, and enjoy our treasured New Year's traditions. But don’t worry, you won’t need any wool gloves or a snow coat to play in this winter wonderland! So grab your wetsuit and join us for a fun-filled week that will surely be unforgettable.
