*Four-day week. No camp on Thursday* What’s black, and white, and found all over the world? Orcnius Orca is the name, but you might know it as the killer whale! Orcas are one of the most easily recognized marine mammals due to their size and black and white pattern. They’re toothed whales and the largest member of the oceanic dolphin family. Orcas have been spotted in the Gulf for over two decades, but little is known about this elusive population. That’s where you come in, Sanibel Sea School campers – join us on a journey to learn more about these apex predators, their incredible hunting skills, and their chatty nature. We’ll explore how researchers identify whales, listen closely with hydrophones to detect the communication of marine mammals, and play plenty of games with our pod. You might even be able to guess the art project this week – it’s a Sanibel Sea School favorite but with a black and white twist! And of course, it wouldn’t be a winter camp without our Give Your Worries to the Sea Ceremony on New Year’s Eve. Believe us, it’s going to be a whale-y good time! So, grab your mugs and your wetsuits because the hot chocolate and the waves are calling.
