The Advanced Sessions are pre-college courses offered to students age 15-19 who have completed one year of high school science, preferably biology or chemistry. These two-week sessions are of a more analytical nature, and students are expected to prepare laboratory reports and analysis of their field work. Students who register for this session will take it for 4 credits from the University of Maine Machias through their Early College Program. AIO is proud to partner with the University of Maine Machias (UMM) to offer this opportunity to 22 rising juniors and seniors attending. The cost of the 4 credits is collected with the AIO tuition and paid to UMM prior to the start of the session. The cost of these 4 credits was an additional $553 in 2023 over and above the AIO tuition and is paid directly to UMM. The 2024 cost will be determined by the spring. Once you've created an account for the student, UMM will bill you directly before the summer. You'll be notified of the link to register an account at UMM when available. This course is an interdisciplinary, hands-on introduction to oceanography. The schedule consists of several field-based lessons in oceanography, formal lectures and laboratory exercises. Students will use a variety of biological, physical and chemical sampling techniques to study coastal and nearshore ecosystems. These will include rocky intertidal zones, beach deposits and Somes Sound. Lecture topics include biological, geological, physical and chemical oceanography. Laboratory exercises will focus on specific topics such as the anatomy of chondrichthyes (sharks) and echinoderm development. Students taking the session for credit will be required to complete additional course work along with a final exam. This is a graded course and, generally, a C- or higher is transferrable. Upon course completion, transcripts can be requested from UMM.
