About This Activity
Description
This camp is intended for students in grades two through eight. It caters to all levels of ability, from beginners to those with ratings up to 1200. Students should arrive in class knowing how to move the pieces. For those who need instruction on piece movement, a free account at www.chesskid.com is highly recommended. The first six lessons on this site are interactive and teach students how to move each piece effectively.
During the camp, there will be a well-rounded balance of instruction, drills, free play, and a chess tournament. The tournament aims to engage students and foster a competitive spirit. The top three students will receive a trophy, and all other participants will get a medal. Instruction in the camp will focus on mastery of board vision, openings, the five basic mates and the most used chess tactics.
