About This Activity

Description

At the Y, our recreational soccer league helps 13 to 17 year olds develop fundamental soccer skills while learning teamwork, strategy, and sportsmanship. Skills that are taught include passing, shooting, dribbling, and the rules of the game. The focus of this program is to have fun, make new friends, and play soccer in a hybrid recreational-competitive environment.

This Soccer League is a 8-week season, 7 games, 1 practice and 1 game per week.

**** ALL TIMES & DAYS are subject to change based on the number of registrations and number of coaches available and their availability.

Program Requirements:
  • Soccer ball: Size 5
  • Shin Guards MUST be worn at all times (mandatory)
  • Wear athletic or comfortable clothing
  • Closed-toes shoes, no crocs. Cleats are optional.
  • Refillable water bottle. Please clearly label all items with your child's name.

Spectators should bring a chair to use when watching for practices and games.

VOLUNTEER COACHES & REFEREES ARE ALWAYS NEEDED!YMCA sports are based on seven guiding principles: Everyone plays, safety first, fair play, positive competition, sports for all, sports for fun, and family involvement. Our sports are supported by parent volunteers who are engaged as coaches, referees, scorekeepers, and raving fans.
The YMCA uses volunteers to provide leadership to the community through structured athletic activities. In person training sessions will be held before the seasons and online training is also available. YMCA staff guidance is provided throughout the season.
If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Shannon Wynn, Sr. Program Director at swynn@suncoastymca.org.
For more information, please call Member Services at 352.688.9622. If needing additional information, email our Sports Coordinator, Chaynne at ccarter@suncoastymca.org or Sr. Program Director, Shannon at swynn@suncoastymca.org.
Special Requests:

Our priorities are creating a playing environment that allows players to be on balanced and fair teams, placing your child on a team that practices on one of your stated evenings and helping our parent volunteers have equal access to resources needed to help players grow in skills and have a fun season.

Practice Times: We will do our best to place your child on a team that will practice on one of the evenings that you listed during the registration process.

Coaches: We appreciate our volunteer coaches and recognize that you may have a coach that your child has previously played with during a prior season. Team assignments will be made based upon a player's skill assessment. We are unable to allow requests or pairings with a specific coach, and expect players to participate in this league to learn sportsmanship and have an enjoyable experience, regardless of the volunteer coach that they are placed with.

Friends: We understand that playing sports with friends can make the experience more enjoyable. However, we want each parent to encourage their child to view their team placement with an open mind. If they are lucky and placed on a team with another player that they already know is fantastic, yet we are not able to accommodate requests. Please help them to see this as an opportunity for them to get to meet new players. Cooperating with new teammates is a great growing experience for them and reminds them that they will still be able to see their friends outside of soccer.
