About This Activity

Instructor: JANET CARNEY Course Description: Literature Alive exposes students to the rich language and enduring truths found in classical literature. Books are carefully selected to promote critical thinking, oral and written language development. Vocabulary, sentence structure and writing style are considered in each literature selection along with story content, age appropriateness, and student interest. Reading aloud is a key element of the curriculum. Students engage with stories through discussion and role-playing, making them active participants rather than passive bystanders, merely observing the action from the sidelines. With invested readers the happy out come is lively discussion and, sometimes, even rigorous debate. Literature Alive encourages the exchange of ideas and inspires the birth of new revelation! As students get lost in the adventure of a favorite book, they simultaneously build vocabulary, increase comprehension, and develop analytical thinking skills, which are lifetime learning tools. Literature Alive also encompasses poetry and book illustrations. Children recite and interpret poetry through choral speaking, dance, and other kinesthetic activities. They also learn to interpret and appreciate the beauty of book art. Beyond training the mind, Literature Alive focuses on building the spirit. The word of God comes alive as students connect scriptural truths imbedded in the stories. Literature Alive: It’s more than a story! Book Information: Students receive a packet for each book with a weekly assignment schedule, vocabulary list and project paper. Assignments are intended for daily study; however, they are guidelines not requirements. The packets are designed to offer a robust literature program for home school students and promote a study discipline. A master book list is posted on Trinity web page at the beginning of the year. Students may either buy or borrow books from a library.
