This class will focus on pivotal battles fought in major wars that have had a significant impact in world history. Events leading to war, reasons for fighting, allies and enemies, war strategies, tactics, technology, weapons, military leaders, geography, outcomes, and consequences and more will be studied and possibly re-enacted if students choose. We will begin our study with the Battle of Kadesh and then follow with the Greco-Persian Wars, the Battle of Gaugamela, 2nd Punic War, the Crusades, Mongol invasions, Hundred Years War, Byzantine-Ottoman Wars, Ottoman conquests, 30 years war, 7 years war, French/Napoleonic Wars, American Revolution, American Civil War, WWI, WWII, Vietnam War, and the Gulf War. The amount of time spent on each battle/war will be determined by the interest of the majority of the students in the class. Materials needed for class are 4 spiral bound notebooks (70 pages each), red, black, blue, and green pens, colored pencils, markers, 1 folder, and a laptop/tablet/smartphone occasionally in class. The following Magic Tree House Fact Tracker Books: Ancient Greece & the Olympics, Ancient Rome, Ninjas & Samurai (China Land of the Emperor's Great Wall), American Revolution, and WWII. Curriculum Resources you may want to purchase but aren't required to do so are: "Battles that Changed History" by DK, "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Warfare from Ancient Egypt to Iraq" by DK, and "Battles that Changed History-Key Battles that Decided the Fate of Nations" by Rupert Butler. The first two books have beautiful illustrations. I like the last book for its concise yet thorough explanation of each battle.
