About This Activity

Work with longtime Actor Factory instructor Alissa Branch in this highly concentrated one-day intensive, delving into the practical application of mastering Shakespeare as it pertains to the modern film/stage actor. William Shakespeare is still the most-produced playwright in the English language, and his works are regularly referenced in modern movies, literature and pop culture. Have you ever wondered why his plays have stood the test of time for almost 500 years? This one-day intensive taught by Factory favorite Alissa Branch, an award-winning Shakespeare director and teacher, is designed for actors who want to further their ability to use heightened text as an actor AND those who are just curious and want to be better-educated about Shakespeare. We’ll explore: How can I learn to decipher the clues to acting that Shakespeare embeds in his texts? What is iambic pentameter and how can I use it? Participants will spend a day learning tips and tricks for how to make Shakespeare’s language their own, how to make strong physical choices that match the characters’ stakes, and how to apply modern acting technique to Shakespeare’s works, in a fun and supportive environment. No experience required!  Alissa says, “My work with Shakespeare’s texts have informed my acting on every level, even when I’m working with modern scripts. Once you start to recognize the acting clues in his texts, and the ways he uses rhythm, metaphor and imagery to tell stories, you’ll notice that modern writers do the same thing, just in a slightly different way.”  Actors will not prepare anything in advance of this workshop. Only 12 seats available.
