About This Activity
English I is a composition-focused course geared towards 9th grade students. Writing will occur every week as we learn how to compose journal entries, short writing assignments, and essays in MLA format. Learning how to edit/proofread will become necessary to grow our composition skills. In literature, we will examine various short stories, poems, and novels as we explore different styles and learn literary terms and analysis. Course includes: SAT Vocabulary Words Grammar Literary Analysis - plot, setting, symbolism, imagery, etc.. Writing from a prompt - journaling Composing in MLA format - Your student will need access to Google Docs or Microsoft Word! Proper research techniques - Citing valid sources, how to distinguish fact from fiction 3 essays 2 pages or longer Novels: The Alchemist (1st semester) Lord of the Flies by William Golding (1st semester) Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury (2nd semester) 1 Play - “A Midsummer’s Night Dream” by William Shakespeare. I have already purchased these in bulk and will “rent” them to each student. Teacher Bio: My name is Amy Loesch and I have been teaching several high school level courses since 2019. I graduated in 2009 with a BA in Religious Education and have taken a significant amount of graduate level courses for teaching and secondary English. My philosophy is that each student learns in his or her own way, and that learning should be FUN and relevant.
