About This Activity

Upper Elementary Literature & Game Design Do you love stories? Do you love games? In this class, you get both! Upper Elementary Literature & Game Design is a hands-on, creative class for 3rd–6th graders that combines a shared novel study with board game play and design. Through hands-on activities, classroom discussions, and games, students will develop critical thinking, analytical reading, comprehension skills, and love for reading. Students will listen to a read-aloud of our class novel, Owls in the Family, and explore characters, plot, setting, theme, and point of view through discussion and creative activities. Along the way, students will strengthen vocabulary and build written and oral communication skills, while building comprehension and critical thinking skills. Whether Owls in the Family is brand new to your child or a family favorite, students will discover plenty of fresh ideas, perspectives, and creative ways to explore the story. The second half of each class is all about games! Students will bring a favorite board or card game to share with a classmate each week as we play, learn rules, and explore what makes games fun and fair. Through gameplay, students practice communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and expression of ideas. At the end of the course, students will design and create their own board game based on the novel, using story events and characters as inspiration. Games will be created during class time and shared with classmates during our final sessions. Come read, play, design, and bring stories to life—one game at a time! Teacher Bio: Hello! My name is Ms. Sarah, and I am thrilled to be teaching for the HEAT! I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Education and English and a Lutheran Christian Teacher’s Diploma, which provides additional credentials for teaching in Christian schools.
