About This Activity
HEAT Mock Trial Team (Grades 9–12) Students will learn the fundamentals of trial advocacy while building skills in public speaking, critical thinking, legal reasoning, teamwork, and persuasive communication. Students will analyze a fictional case, learn courtroom procedures and rules of evidence, prepare opening and closing statements, conduct direct and cross-examinations, and serve as attorneys and witnesses. No prior experience is required. The team will accept up to 24 students, with at least 6 required for competition. The official competition team is limited to 12 students—six prosecution and six defense. Roles will be based on preparedness, commitment, and team needs. Additional students may participate in scrimmages, serve as alternates, and compete in individual events when available. The competition is held at the Hillsborough County Courthouse in February, typically the third weekend and most likely February 20 (official date TBD). Regular attendance and outside preparation are expected, particularly after the case is released in late October. Business attire is requested for competition. Teacher Bio: Erin Bratspis holds a B.A. in Creative Writing and an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction. She has 12 years of public-school teaching experience and 10 years of homeschooling, homeschool teaching, and private tutoring experience. She has also worked as an independent contractor for the U.S. Department of Education and will work closely with a local attorney to prepare HEAT’s inaugural Mock Trial team.
