About This Activity
In this middle school English Literature class, students will dive into key literature concepts—such as theme, character development, conflict, and point of view—while building vocabulary through six powerful novels. From the friendship and struggles in The Outsiders and Freak the Mighty to questions of identity in Restart and The Maze Runner, and from the humor and resilience of Bud, Not Buddy to the historical depth of The Devil’s Arithmetic, students will engage in thoughtful discussions, close reading, and creative responses that build strong reading, thinking, and communication skills. BIO: Lauren Cliff is a 2nd-year teacher with HEAT, bringing a strong background in humanities, English literature, and U.S. history into everything she teaches. With over 20 years of customer service experience, she leads with patience, empathy, and real-world grit. She’s a proud mom of three, happily married, and in her fourth year of homeschooling her own kids—proof that teaching doesn’t stop when the school day ends.
