Super Spellers ADVANCED Spelling ability varies, so placement should be based more on skill level than age. Super Spellers Advanced is for students with a strong phonics and spelling foundation who are ready for more challenging words, advanced spelling rules, word structure, prefixes, suffixes, and vocabulary. Rather than memorizing word lists, students will learn to recognize patterns, break apart words, and use strategies to understand why words are spelled the way they are. Students should be able to: Read and write independently Use phonics and common spelling patterns confidently Identify long/short vowel sounds and syllables Work independently with multisyllable words and sentence dictation Topics include: Change Y to I, Change F to V, 2-1-1 Suffix Rule, IE vs. EI, schwa spellings, contractions, homophones, advanced suffixes and word endings such as -ion, -le, -able, -ible, and -ious, and more. Sample words: invisible, narrator, conclusion, assignment, emergency, orchestra, unfortunate, pioneering, scissors, cautiously, adventurous, substantial, intellectual, survival, reopening. Students are not expected to already know these words; they simply show the approximate level of the class. Students will receive weekly words for optional home practice. No traditional spelling tests—practice will include whiteboards, dictation, word analysis, vocabulary, prefixes/suffixes, and games such as Bananagrams, Boggle, and Scrabble. Supplies: single-subject spiral notebook, erasable colored pencils, dry-erase marker, pencils, and glue stick. Questions? Kellykrutz@gmail.com
