About This Activity
Welcome to Upper Elementary Literature! This class is for 3rd-6th graders. Through fun hands-on activities, classroom discussions, & games, students will develop their critical thinking, analytical reading, comprehension skills, and love for reading and books! We will explore themes and characters, plot development, setting, and other literary elements. Students will improve their vocabulary and written and oral communication skills! Our Novel Study this semester will be Henry Huggins, a classic upper elementary novel. I will read aloud during each class period and we will have class discussion and hands-on activities based on that day’s reading. In addition to our Novel Study, we will explore poetry and wonderful children’s picture books including Blueberries for Sal, Madeline, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, and more! The only homework will be preparing for our Book Character Party on the last day of the semester! Each student will choose a grade-level appropriate novel to read at home during the semester. More details to come! Supplies: one spiral notebook, one 3-ring pencil pouch with clear window, pre-sharpened pencils, and one box 24 count Crayola crayons. Please label all supplies with your child’s first and last name. Teacher Bio: Hello! My name is Ms. Sarah and I have my Bachelor’s Degree in Education and English. I also have my Lutheran Christian Teacher’s Diploma which means I have additional credentials for teaching in Christian schools. I have taught and tutored for many years in schools throughout the US and I also had the fun opportunity to teach English while living in Belgium. My husband and I have been married for seventeen years and we have two elementary-aged children. I absolutely love teaching literature and encouraging students as they develop into lifelong learners and readers!
