About This Activity
Step into the world of authors and illustrators! In this creative and engaging class, students ages 6–11 will research, write, and illustrate their very own book to take home at the end of the semester. Along the way, they’ll learn about the parts of a book, explore how illustrations support storytelling, and practice important skills. Each student will choose an animal to research using library books and prior printed articles (this is a technology-free class), and each student's project will be tailored to their own academic level and abilities. Throughout the semester, we’ll also enjoy a read-aloud and guided discussion of Tornado by Betsy Byars. To make the experience extra memorable (and back by POPULAR demand), each week will be paired with Tea and snacks to enjoy while we work. By the end of our time together, students will proudly hold a completed, published-style storybook they’ve authored and illustrated themselves—a keepsake they’ll treasure for years to come. Teacher Bio: My name is Alexa Loprino, and I’m a certified Florida teacher with credentials in Elementary Education (K–6) and Exceptional Student Education (K–12). I’m also a proud USF graduate (Go Bulls!) and have spent the past 13+ years tutoring and teaching children across a variety of settings. I’m especially passionate about supporting students of all abilities and love teaching English Language Arts! When I’m not teaching, you can find my family and I enjoying Disney trips, going camping (or should I say glamping), swimming, or gathered around a board game. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to teach your child this semester and can’t wait to inspire a love of learning in them!
