About This Activity

Working with clay, water and their own two hands, 6/7 yr old students will learn the basics of hand building with clay. Using lumps of clay, these students will learn to make pinch pots and faces and more. Students ages 3-5 will experience creativity flow and freedom, almost always having free time. For all ages, this grounding and therapeutic tactile experience of working with clay and water is a little dose of weekly art therapy in the ceramics studio. This class includes parents who are welcome to create alongside their child(ren)! We will use sponges, wooden carving and texture tools and small amounts of water and slip (wet clay for bonding.) We will use Stoneware clay bodies. Your students will have the opportunity to glaze (color) their pieces using underglazes. Parents will have the opportunity to use under and overglazes. Some days will be designated glazing classes. With the many stages of ceramics from start to finish, this class requires patience for taking finished pieces home. Firings will not be immediate but rather happening throughout the weeks as student work gets moved through the line/ process... Requirements: No experience necessary; parents required to attend class with littles ages 3 and 4; 5, 6 and 7 year olds may attend class without parents CLASS GOALS -For each family to take home in clay: a few thumbprint ornaments, 1 nature tile, 1 hand print tile, 1pinch pot and an original creation -For this class to: deliver tactile therapy and to inspire, filling the artistic bucket and nourishing creativity. -To instill confidence in working with hands by engaging fine motor skills.
