About This Activity

Nature Forward's) Stream Science series continues online with Introduction to Stream Science Part 2: How to Read Your Stream. In the first half of this class, learn about the influence of land uses on streams, stream character and dynamics, bank erosion, bar formation, substrate composition, different velocity-depth regimes, and the importance of riffles and riparian vegetation. Learn which types of habitat support various types of Benthic Macroinvertebrates and fish. For the second half of this class, students practice assessing stream habitat by using photographs of streams and the forms that ANS monitors fill out in the field. This class is required for those who wish to join Nature Forward's Water Quality Monitoring Program in Maryland and Washington, DC, and strongly recommended for anyone who does aquatic monitoring, fly fishermen, stream restoration scientists, consultants, and engineers, and of course naturalists and biologists. Following this class, take the 7-class "Advanced Stream Science" series to learn how to identify many kinds of aquatic benthic macroinvertebrates to the family level. An online quiz is required at the completion of the course for those who wish to be certified as Nature Forward Water Quality Monitoring Program team leaders.
