About This Activity

Description

Jazz Theory Online offers a unique approach to understanding the musical elements used in jazz improvisation and composition. This class can be taken by students of all instruments with no prior experience playing or studying jazz, students who play jazz "by ear", and experienced jazz performers interested in brushing up/reinforcing/filling in the gaps in their knowledge of Jazz Theory.

Students should have a basic understanding of general music theory, equivalent to having completed Levine's Music Theory for Adults: Intermediate. Before enrolling in Jazz Theory Online, students should have a working understanding of:

  • Reading notes on the staff (treble and bass clef)
  • Reading and performing rhythms
  • Major and minor Scales
  • Key signatures
  • Intervals
  • Triad construction
  • Harmony and cadence
Jazz Theory Online is hosted by Music First, an innovative online classroom that provides easy access to course materials and communication between students and instructors. Music First's suite of instructional software helps students build musical fluency in an interactive environment. Students will have access to the following software:
  • Musition (Basic Theory Skills)
  • Auralia (Ear Training Skills)
  • Noteflight (Music Notation)
  • Practice First (Sight Reading)
Jazz Theory Online is a 16 Unit Class. Students will be able to complete the class at their own pace, with the recommendation that they log in on a weekly basis and complete one Unit per week.

Students should have access to a computer. Music First recommends the Google Chrome browser for optimal software performance.
This is an asynchronous class - students may register anytime and complete the course at their own rate.
