About This Activity

Description

In Theory Level 2, students continue their study of rhythm, reading notes on the staff, scales, key signatures, intervals, chords, and musical signs and terms. Level 2 introduces basic musical forms and harmony. Students apply these skills to a short composition project at the end of the class. Levine’s music theory classes feature engaging, interactive learning designed to help young musicians develop sight-reading, rhythm, listening, and composition skills.

This class corresponds to Level 2 of Levine’s keyboard-skills curriculum. However, the music theory skills taught in this class have broad application to students who play any instrument. Please consult the Music Theory Syllabus for a complete description of the skills taught in Theory Level 2.

Levine’s online music theory classes use an innovative online classroom that provides easy access to course materials and communication between students and instructors. Integrated instructional software helps students build musical fluency in an interactive environment.

Students will hone their skills using the following software:

Musition (Basic Theory Skills)

Auralia (Ear Training Skills)

Noteflight (Music Notation)

Practice First (Sight Reading and Sight Singing)

The class consists of 8 units. Each unit includes a weekly online lesson, an assignment, and a short quiz. Students can log on any day/time of the week to complete this work. Students will receive direct feedback and guidance from the instructor on their work. Students also have the opportunity to video chat with the instructor during office hours.

Students should have previously completed Theory Level 1 or have equivalent music-theory skills. New students may register for an online placement test to determine placement in this or a higher theory level. After completing the test, you will receive a class recommendation and registration link from the Department Chair.
