Step into the garden and explore the wide world of herbs! In this five-day camp, students ages 10-13 will undertake a broad survey of herbalism, from plant identification to herbal preparations to planting and caring for an herb garden. Students will be introduced to more than 20 edible, medicinal, and otherwise useful herbs and will have the chance to taste (when safe) and work with them in several hands-on projects. Perfect for nature lovers, green thumbs, and fantasy enthusiasts, this camp will inspire students to herbal creativity and invite them into a lifelong relationship with our plant allies. *Students should bring: sturdy, closed-toed shoes, drinking water. Optional: sunscreen, hat for sun protection (most of the camp will take place indoors, but some days we will go outside for up to an hour at a time), a small snack Laura Handley has been a hiker, camper, and outdoor enthusiast since childhood. Driven by a deep respect for the beauty and danger of the natural world, she has traveled to many remote places and learned firsthand what it takes to get there and get home safely. Laura is also a Virginia Master Naturalist and does volunteer work in habitat restoration, invasive plant removal, and nature education for children and adults.
