Through the study of domestic animals, local wildlife, and species from around the world, students learn that all animals share certain survival needs—and that they meet those needs in different ways. They investigate the external parts of various animals and discover that each structure has a function that supports survival, and that its shape relates to that function. For their final project, students take on the role of engineers, identifying a real-world problem and designing a solution inspired by the biomimicry of an animal or animal part. Using available materials, they then build a model of their new invention.
