This is a survey class with three 6-week components of biology, chemistry and physics and is designed to be equivalent to a high school level science course and to meet the eligibility requirements for 8th graders applying to IMSA. There will be a synchronous portion each Tuesday from 4-5 pm, CST. Class will run the week of January 11th through May 14th, with some flexibility to accommodate for participant's spring break. To be eligible students must be in 8th grade, and priority enrollment will be given to 8th graders with an open application to IMSA. Students will earn grades of either Distinguished, Pass, or Fail. A “Pass” grade is obtained by achieving a 70% in each of the three content modules. A “Pass with Distinction” grade may be achieved by participating in the weekly Tuesday Zoom meetings, 4-5 pm CST (which are otherwise optional) and achieving a 90% in each of the three content modules. The weekly time commitment is estimated at 4-5 hours. There will also be additional weekly Office Hours posted for support from faculty. Students who complete this class will not be given priority admission to IMSA. This class is not offered for transfer credit to another secondary institution. Additional "lab based" materials will need to be purchased by students at a cost no more than $50 (an Amazon shopping list will be provided - and will be emailed to registrants once available in early Dec). Financial-needs-based scholarships will be available. Eligibility is based on the Federal guidelines for the Free or Reduced Lunch Program. A school administrator verification or other governmental documentation is required to be considered for a scholarship. If obtaining these documents is currently a hardship, please reach out to us at studentenrichment@imsa.edu. You will also be required to submit a short essay. You may not simultaneously submit a paid registration along with a scholarship application. Scholarship applications are due on Sunday, December 13th, 2020.
