About This Activity
The Illinois Tollway has partnered with the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) to provide a 20 lesson inquiry-based, hands-on, middle school STEM module called "Future Highway: Civil Engineering at Work". Each activity in the module lasts 40-45 minutes and includes all of the materials as well as student and teacher pages in English and Spanish. Designed by the curriculum writers and professional development specialists in IMSA's Center for teaching and learning, these activities exemplify IMSA's core value that teaching and learning should be inquiry-based, problem-centered, competency-driven, and integrative. Modeled after the award-winning IMSA Fusion program, the Future Highway Module includes professional development for the teachers, not only on teaching the activities but on how to engage students and promote their critical thinking skills.
