About This Activity
The Gilman Pep Band is a student group that performs throughout the school year at football games, basketball games, and other important Gilman events. The Pep Band has also performed at local charity events in the greater Baltimore area. This group specializes in the performance of music from the New Orleans Brass Band tradition. The ensemble plays arrangements by such groups as “The Rebirth Brass Band,” “The Dirty Dozen Brass,” “The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble,” “The Soul Rebels,” and the “Hot 8 Brass Band,” amongst others. This camp will combine the current members of the Gilman Pep Band with others in the community who would like to perform with us for the week. It will be open to brass players and woodwind players from grades 6-12. In addition, the band is open to percussionists, as we have both drum set players and a drumline to accompany the ensemble. We will spend the week learning and reviewing a set list of about 10-12 pieces that will culminate in a performance for the parents and the community. So, if you want to let loose and jam out to some fast moving and groovin’ brass band charts, this week long camp is perfect for you. Students must play percussion, brass, or woodwinds and have at least 2 years of experience to join. Peter Lander (plander@gilman.edu) has been teaching and performing music around the Baltimore and DC region for the past 25 years. He has been the Director of Bands at the Gilman School in Baltimore, MD for the past 10 years, where he directs the band program from grades 5-12.
