Learn to Race – Optimist Sailing Overview: Learn to Race – Optimist Sailing is designed for young sailors who have successfully completed Learn to Sail Level 1 and Level 2 or have equivalent experience. This course introduces sailors to the fundamentals of racing in a fun and supportive environment, building on basic sailing skills while developing competitive techniques. Ideal for motivated sailors ages 8–13 who are ready to take the next step in their sailing journey. Course Features: For sailors ages 8–13 Prerequisite: Completion of Learn to Sail Level 1 & 2 or instructor approval Sailing solo in Optimist dinghies Emphasis on confidence, independence, and racing preparation Focus on small group coaching and on-the-water learning What Students Will Learn: Racing rules and starting sequences Optimist boat tuning for speed and control Advanced sail trim and body positioning Upwind and downwind strategy Mark roundings, laylines, and tactical decision-making Reading wind shifts and current How to sail in a fleet, avoid collisions, and hold position Sportsmanship and respect for competitors Regatta preparation, including checklists and gear Learning Goals: By the end of the course, students should be able to: Demonstrate proper pre-race boat setup Understand and apply basic racing rules Start a race confidently using timing and positioning Execute tactical tacks, gybes, and mark roundings Identify shifts and respond with smart decisions Handle varied wind conditions with control and safety Compete in practice races and local regattas Exhibit positive sportsmanship and teamwork This course is the perfect bridge from recreational sailing to competitive racing, giving young sailors the skills and confidence to join a race team or enter their first regatta!
