About This Activity

Description

Parent & Child classes are offered as Split-Level Parent & Child Level 1 & Parent & Child Level 2 swimming class at the Covington Aquatic Center.

What happens in Parent & Child Aquatics Level 1?

For each of our Parent & Child classes, our instructors follow a plan to introduce new swimming and water safety skills that are developmentally appropriate for infants and young children. It is important to understand that Parent and Child Aquatics is not designed to teach children to become good swimmers or even to survive in the water on their own. In Parent and Child Aquatics Level 1, great experiences and fun activities are provided to teach infants and young children to:

  • Enter and exit the water safety
  • Feel comfortable in the water
  • Submerge and explore breath control
  • Explore floating on the back and front
  • Change body position in the water
  • Play safely in the water
  • Experience wearing a life jacket

Parents, you also learn!:

  • How to hold and support your child in the water
  • How to select and fit a life jacket for your child
  • Valuable water safety information to make your family safe in and around the water

Once infants or young children are able to comfortably perform the skills in Level 1, they should progress to Parent & Child Aquatics Level 2. It is common for infants or young children to participate in several sessions of Level 1 before moving on to Level 2. That is okay! It is not important how quickly they move through a level, but that they acquire each skill.

What happens in Parent & Child Aquatics Level 2?

For both levels of Parent & Child Aquatics, our instructors follow a plan to introduce swimming and water safety skills that are developmentally appropriate for infants and toddlers. Routines and the familiar are extremely important to this age group. Each class uses toys, songs, fun and games to keep the children engaged and enjoying the water experience, all-the-while teaching them basic aquatic skills. Parent & Child Aquatics Level 2 builds upon the skills learned in Level 1. In the Parent & Child Aquatics Level 2 course, great experiences and fun activities will be provided to allow your child to:

  • Learn more ways to enter and exit the water safely
  • Submerge in a rhythmic pattern
  • Glide on the front and back with assistance
  • Perform combined stroke on front and back with assistance
  • Change body position in the water
  • Experience wearing a life jacket in the water

It is common for young children to participate in several sessions of Level 2. That is okay! It is not important how quickly they move through a level, but that they acquire each skill. Children move through the two levels of Parent & Child Aquatics based on their comfort level with the water. After successfully completing Parent & Child Aquatics, children who are about 4 years of age are eligible for Preschool Aquatics Level 1. A parent or guardian must accompany the infant or child in the water.
