About This Activity
Description
What Happens in Learn-to-Swim Level 4 - Stroke Improvement?
Learn-to-Swim Level 4 participants improve their aquatic skills and increase their endurance by swimming the strokes learned in Level 3 (front crawl, elementary backstroke) for greater distances and more advance proficiency. Participants add arm actions to the previously learned scissor kick and breaststroke kick to perform the rudimentary sidestroke and learn the breaststroke. Participants also begin to learn back crawl and butterfly, as well as basics of performing a simple turn at a wall. Flotation devices such as kickboards and pull buoys are utilized in this level.
Learn-to-Swim Level 4 includes skills such as:
- Headfirst entry from the side in a compact position (in water at least 9 feet deep)
- Headfirst entry from side in a stride position (in water at least 9 feet deep)
- Swim underwater (3 to 5 body lengths)
- Feetfirst surface dive (submerged completely)
- Survival swimming (at least 1 minute in deep water)
- Front crawl and back crawl open turn (while swimming)
- Tread water using two different kicks (modified scissor, modified breaststroke or rotary for at least 2 minutes)
- Front crawl (at least 25 yards)
- Breaststroke (at least 15 yards)
- Butterfly (at least 15 yards)
- Push off in a streamlined position and begin flutter kicking (3 to 5 body lengths)
- Push off in a streamlined position and begin dolphin kicking (3 to 5 body lengths)
- Elementary backstroke (at least 25 yards)
- Back crawl (at lest 15 yards)
- Sidestroke (at least 15 yards)
It is common for children to participate in several sessions of Learn to Swim Level 4 before they successfully demonstrate each skill. That is okay! It is not important how quickly they move through a level, but that they acquire each skill.
To be able to progress to the next level, the participant must be able to do all the skills above including the exit skills assessment prior to the last day of class.
Parents and guardians must stay off the pool deck during swim lessons and not attempt to coach their swimmer based on what they observe during lessons. All are expected to observe sessions from the elevated spectator area, keeping the pool deck clear of non-participants. Please note that we do not allow any person to climb on or through the railings. Accessibility accommodations should be requested through the front desk and discussed with the instructor as well.
For safety reasons, wet bodies are not allowed in the spectator area. Swimmers may dry off completely on deck or in a locker room before being seated in the spectator area.
