About This Activity
Description
What Happens in Preschool Aquatics Level 1?
Preschool Aquatics Level 1 introduces basic aquatic skills, which children continue to build on as they progress through level 2 of Preschool Aquatics and Learn-to-Swim. Includes using flotation devises such as foam noodles, kickboards, or swim bar floats. In addition, children start to develop attitudes and safe practices around the water.
Preschool Aquatics Level 1 includes skills such as:
- Enter and exit water using ramps, steps or side (independently)
- Blow bubbles (independently)
- Submerge mouth, nose, and eyes (in shallow water)
- Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects (in shallow water)
- Front glide (with or without assistance, at least 2 body lengths)
- Recover from a front glide to a vertical position (with or without assistance, at least 2 body lengths)
- Back glide (with assistance, at least 2 body lengths)
- Back float (with assistance, at least 3 seconds)
- Recover from back float or glide to a vertical position (with assistance)
- Roll from front to back and back to front (with support)
- Arm and hand treading action (in chest-deep water)
- Alternating leg action on front (with support, at least 2 body lengths)
- Simultaneous leg action on front (with support, at least 2 body lengths)
- Alternating arm action on front (with support, at least 2 body lengths)
- Simultaneous arm action on front (with support, at least 2 body lengths)
- Combined arm and leg action on front (with support, at least 2 body lengths)
- Alternating leg action on back (with support, at least 2 body lengths)
- Simultaneous leg action on back (with support, at least 2 body lengths)
- Alternating arm action on back (with support, at least 2 body lengths)

It is quite common for children to participate in several sessions of Preschool Aquatics Level 1 before they are able to successfully demonstrate all the skills. That's okay! It is not important how quickly they move through a level, but that they acquire each skill.
To be able to progress to the next level, the participant must be able to do all the skills above including the exit skills assessment prior to the last day of class. To be able to move up to our Learn-to-Swim levels the participant must be at least 6 years of age.
Parents and guardians must stay off the pool deck during swim lessons and not attempt to coach their swimmer based on what they observe during lessons. All are expected to observe sessions from the elevated spectator area, keeping the pool deck clear of non-participants. Please note that we do not allow any person to climb on or through the railings. Accessibility accommodations should be requested through the front desk and discussed with the instructor as well.
For safety reasons, wet bodies are not allowed in the spectator area. Swimmers may dry off completely on deck or in a locker room before being seated in the spectator area.

Non-Sufficient Fund (NSF) Check Policy: An NSF check processing fee will be imposed for all returned checks and could result in refusal of future participation.
