About This Activity
Description
What Happens in Preschool Aquatics Level 2?Preschool Aquatics Level 2's objective is to further develop basic aquatic skills. Children begin to perform skills at a slightly more advanced level (for example, for longer lengths of time, longer distances or in deeper water). Many skills in Preschool Level 1 are performed with assistance. Preschool Level 2 marks the beginning of independent aquatic locomotion skills. Children continue to explore using simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back to gain great proficiency in preparation for performing strokes. Includes using flotation devices such as foam noodles, kickboards, or swim bar floats.
Preschool Aquatics Level 2 includes skills such as:
- Enter water by stepping in from the deck or low height (independently in shoulder-deep water)
- Exit water using ladder, steps or side (independently, in shoulder-deep water)
- Bobbing (independently, at least 5 times)
- Open eyes underwater and retrieve submerged objects (independently, in chest-deep water)
- Front glide (with assistance, at least 2 body lengths)
- Front float (with assistance, at least 2 body lengths)
- Recover from front float or glide to a vertical position (with assistance, in chest-deep water)
- Back glide (with assistance, at least 2 body lengths)
- Back float (with assistance, at least 5 seconds)
- Recover from back float or glide to vertical position (with assistance, in chest deep water)
- Roll from front to back and back to front (with assistance,)
- Tread water using arm and leg actions (with assistance, at least 15 seconds)
- Combined arm and leg actions on front (with assistance, at least 3 body lengths)
- Finning arm and leg action on back (with assistance, at least 3 body lengths)
- Combined arm and leg action on back (with assistance, at least 3 body lengths)
It is quite common for children to participate in several sessions of Preschool Aquatics Level 2 before they are able to successfully demonstrate all the skills. That's okay! It is not important how quickly they move through a level, but that they acquire each skill.
To be able to progress to the next level, the participant must be able to do all the skills above including the exit skills assessment prior to the last day of class. To be able to move up to our Learn-to-Swim levels the participant must be at least 6 years of age.
Parents and guardians must stay off the pool deck during swim lessons and not attempt to coach their swimmer based on what they observe during lessons. All are expected to observe sessions from the elevated spectator area, keeping the pool deck clear of non-participants. Please note that we do not allow any person to climb on or through the railings. Accessibility accommodations should be requested through the front desk and discussed with the instructor as well.
For safety reasons, wet bodies are not allowed in the spectator area. Swimmers may dry off completely on deck or in a locker room before being seated in the spectator area.
