What Happens in Learn-to-Swim Level 3 - Stroke Development?
Learn-to-Swim Level 3's objective is to expand proficiency of previously learned skills by providing additional guided practice. Participants learn and practice survival floating and learn to swim front crawl and elementary backstroke at rudimentary proficiency levels. Introduction to scissor and dolphin kick and extend time duration for trading water are included. Participants also learn rules for headfirst entries and begin to learn and enter the water headfirst from a seated position (if water is 9 feet deep or deeper). New and previously addressed water safety topics are included. Using flotation devices such as foam noodles, kickboards or swim bars are included with this level.
Learn-to-Swim Level 3 includes skills such as:
- Enter water by jumping from the side, fully submerge, then recover to surface to return to the side (in deep water)
- Headfirst entry from the side in a sitting position (in water at least 9 feet deep)
- Headfirst entry from side in a kneeling position (in water at least 9 feet deep)
- Bobbing while moving towards safety (in chest-deep water at least 15 times)
- Rotary breathing (15 times)
- Survival float on front (at least 30 seconds in deep water)
- Back float (at least 1 minute in deep water)
- Change from vertical to horizontal position on front and back (in deep water)
- While in a vertical position, rotate on full turn (in deep water)
- Tread water (1 minute in deep water)
- Push off in a streamlined position on front, then begin flutter kicking (3 to 5 body lengths)
- Push off in a streamlined position on front, them begin dolphin kicking (3 to 5 body lengths)
- Front crawl (at least 15 yards)
- Breaststroke kick (at least 15 yards)
- Elementary backstroke (at least 15 yards)
- Scissor kick ( at least 15 yards)
It is common for children to participate in several sessions of Learn to Swim Level 3 before they successfully demonstrate each skill. That is okay! It is not important how quickly they move through a level, but that they acquire each skill.
To be able to progress to the next level, the participant must be able to do all the skills above including the exit skills assessment prior to the last day of class.
Parents and guardians must stay off the pool deck during swim lessons and not attempt to coach their swimmer based on what they observe during lessons. All are expected to observe sessions from the elevated spectator area, keeping the pool deck clear of non-participants. Please note that we do not allow any person to climb on or through the railings. Accessibility accommodations should be requested through the front desk and discussed with the instructor as well.
For safety reasons, wet bodies are not allowed in the spectator area. Swimmers may dry off completely on deck or in a locker room before being seated in the spectator area.
