About This Activity

For a period in history, catapults and trebuchets were the most widely used tools for a siege and the mechanisms behind how they work are fascinating! In this one week adventure, we will be designing, building, and competing with our own launchers utilizing the fabrication services of our maker lab! Kids will get to use 3D printers, laser cutters, springs, and elastics to design and build their own launching mechanisms with the guidance of instructors and compete in a number of competition challenges: Tower Storm Targets, How high can you go, How far can you throw, and more. These aren’t your “run-of-the-mill” catapults out of popsicle sticks and glue – these are catapults designed to last and taken to a whole new level using custom-designed 3D printed parts, custom-designed laser cut wood, and fasteners. Students will learn the ins & outs of Computer-Aided Design (CAD), measurements, potential & kinetic energy, pivots & torque, design thinking, and other Applied Design Skills and Technologies (ADST) related to the BC Curriculum! This camp is for those young makers interested in building things using 3D printers and laser cutters. Kids will learn fundamental skills and tools to begin working on their own engineering projects at home. They’ll also be taking home their catapult and a number of their own other mini-projects (3D prints and laser cuts) they worked on along the way. This camp will push you technically so get ready! >> Highly recommended for students that enjoyed the engineering activities of our STEAM SAMPLER camp. Technical difficulty is at a beginner level and no matter what the outcome our top priority is to have fun and challenge ourselves.
