About This Activity

Description

Aikido is a modern, non-violent Japanese traditional martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba (often referred to by his title ‘O-Sensei’ or ‘Great Teacher’) in the 20th Century. Unlike Karate and Tae Kwon Do, Aikido focuses not on punching or kicking opponents, but rather on using their own energy against them and to gain control of them or to redirect and throw them away from you. It is not a static art but places great emphasis on motion and the dynamics of movement, which makes it more effective than any other martial arts. “Dogi” or Aikido “Gi” is the basic costume worn by all Aikido students, which is a requirement and may be purchased online or from the instructor. All testing requirements are based on the traditional requirements from Aikikai Foundation Hombu Dojo in Japan, as a minimum. Registration to a National and/or International Aikido Association may be required later on.Beginners Class: This is an on-going introductory class for men and women, which covers warms-ups and fundamental techniques, starting from the primary foundation of Aikido (tai-sabaki and ukemi) and gradually advancing to the application of various basic Aikido techniques.Advanced Class: This class includes more rigorous training to forge mind, body, and spirit exposing the students to a vast array of advanced Aikido techniques.Weapons Class: This includes various forms (kata) and techniques using bokken (wooden sword), jo (staff), and tanto (wooden knife). All Levels: This class gives emphasis on various Aikido techniques suited for various skill levels.
