Expectations:
This class is meant for those who have passed through the preschool levels and are over the age of 6 or those who are over the age of 6 and beginner swimmers
3-5 minutes at the beginning of each lesson is dedicated to safety topics and attendance
The first few days will be spent reviewing skills already known and refining them
Flotation aids such as noodles, barbells , or other flotation devices will be regularly used
Some activities will be 1 on 1 with instructor and others will be group activities. There will be down time while children wait their turn
This class will take place in the deep end
Most actions will be done independently of instructor and with the assistance of flotation aids with the instructor closely monitoring
This class will focus on beginning swimming skills and independence in the water
What skills they should already know:
Bobs - where children submerge their entire head and resurface
Back float with ears in, flat back, and completely still with small amount of instructor or flotation device assistance
Front float with face in, flat body, and completely still with small amount of instructor or flotation device assistance
Comfort moving in the water independently of instructor with a flotation device
Jumping in independently
What skills they will learn:
Back stroke - kicking on back with head flat in the water and arm movements
Front crawl - kicking on stomach with face in the water and arm movements
Treading water - staying vertical in the water and maintaining the head above the surface while in deep water
Front glide - pushing off the wall, face in, and basic streamline motion
Back glide - pushing off the wall, and basic streamline motion
Gaining confidence in independent movements in the water
