American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course

This American Red Cross Lifeguarding course prepares participants to recognize, prevent, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Training includes water rescues, surveillance, extrication, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers, First Aid, and emergency response skills. Successful participants will earn an American Red Cross Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid certification, valid for two years.

PREREQUISITES:

Participants must be at least 15 years old by the final day of the course and successfully complete the required Red Cross prerequisite swimming skills evaluation before beginning training:

  • Swim-Tread-Swim: Swim 150 yards, tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs, then swim an additional 50 yards without stopping.
  • Timed Event: Within 1 minute, 40 seconds, swim 20 yards, surface dive to 7–10 feet and retrieve a 10-pound object, return 20 yards on your back while holding the object at the surface, and exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Participants who cannot successfully complete the prerequisite skills will not be eligible to continue into the Lifeguarding course.
