About This Activity

"Slip on your field-scientist mindset and dive into the hidden world of freshwater life! Campers explore creeks and lakes as living systems, discovering how water quality, habitat, and food webs support the fish and critters that live there. Campers search the creek for aquatic macroinvertebrates and other small organisms, using observation skills to identify what they find and what it reveals about ecosystem health. They’ll investigate fish adaptations through an age-appropriate fish dissection or specimen investigation, examining structures like gills, fins, and swim bladders to connect anatomy to function. Campers also learn fishing safety and etiquette, then cast a line at Vasona Lake while practicing responsible, respectful outdoor behavior. By the end of the week, learners will understand how freshwater habitats support wildlife and will strengthen skills in field observation, comparing evidence, and ecological reasoning. Logistics: YSI provides fishing poles and bait; campers should bring sun protection like a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen." *Please note that camp will NOT be in session due to the holiday weekend
