About This Activity
This class will hone novice racers' (ages 12-18) skills while introducing them to the lifelong sport of sailboat racing. Most accomplished sailors participating in professional racing, college competitions, and the Olympics started in a green fleet class. Start your racing journey at MSA with our excellent team of coaches! Please note that sailors may only participate in the Green Fleet program for one summer before advancing to the C420 Race Team. On- and off-the-water instruction will introduce the rules of racing, basic race tactics, and race-oriented handling of the C420 as both skipper and crew. When complete, sailors will be ready to handle wind conditions up to 16 knots confidently, sail around a triangle race course, and be prepared to join MSA’s C420 Race Team and train to compete in more advanced regattas. Green Fleeters may participate in local regattas, including MSA’s own Green Fleet Regatta, depending on their race readiness and the instructor’s guidance. Sailors are welcome to join this class after completing several sessions of Beginner C420, participating in MSA's Opti Race Team, or demonstrating a solid grasp of intermediate sailing skills. If you're unsure of whether the C420 Green Fleet is appropriate for your sailor, please contact the Program Director. Registration is available for individual 2-week sessions; sailors who register for multiple sessions in one order receive an automatic discount. The cost of registration covers tuition and access to an MSA C420 for use at practice and regattas for the duration of the session.
